CHEGE Erastus Nduati, SDB

30 May 2017, STS Jerusalem

Rev. Deacon Chege Erastus on 30th May defended his synthesis entitled, the mystery of the Trinity as revealed through the sacrament of marriage and the Christian interpretation of African traditional marriages.

The panel that examined Chege was made up of Rev. Fr Biju Michael SDB (President of STS); Rev. Fr. Giovanni Caputa SDB (Tutor for the Defense) and Rev. Fr Moses Wanjala SDB (Reader for the Defense). Fr Biju began first by welcoming the audience present. He then requested Chege to present his synthesis within 10 minutes.

Chege’s synthesis contained three chapters. In the first chapter, he dealt with the mystery of the Holy Trinity which is revealed through the sacrament of the marriage in the Old Testament. In the second chapter, he presented the revelation in how the sacrament of marriage is celebrated basically from the point of view of the New Testament. Finally, in the last chapter, Deacon Chege focused on the Christian interpretation of marriage in the African tradition, looking at the past heritage and the present with reference to the Apostolic Exhortation on the Role of Christian Family in the Modern World.

The first examiner on the defence panel was Rev. Fr. Giovanni who expressed his gratitude to Dn. Chege for choosing him as his guide and congratulated him for his remarkable work. Fr. Giovanni asked Dn. Chege to explain the purpose or value of the consecrated life basing on Vita Consecrata. In response, Dn. Chege expounded, how the consecrated life is rooted in the example and teaching of Christ and considered it as a gift of God to His Church through the Holy Spirit. According to him, the purpose of Christian life is a universal call to holiness and a call to religious life.

The next examiner, Rev. Fr Moses asked about how Christian marriage is a foretaste of the wedding feast of communion throughout the liturgical year. In response to that question Dn. Chege vibrantly explained the close relationship between the heavenly liturgy and the sacrament of marriage. Moreover, it is a foretaste because the spouses celebrate their wedding here on earth in actuality with all its glory and joy an example of the heavenly banquet. Eventually, Fr. Biju asked some questions on traditional African cultural values in marriage and relationship between God and African proverbs.

After a short break, the Bachelor of Theology defence panel met and Rev Dr Biju read the declaration on behalf of the Church and the Pontifical University that Chege Erastus SDB officially concludes his Bachelors of Theology degree.

We congratulate him on his completion of the degree for the Bachelors in Theology and continue praying for him for his ordination to priesthood which will be on 13th July 2017 (Nairobi, Kenya).
