Studium Theologicum Salesianum
Salesian Pontifical University : Faculty of Theology - Jerusalem Campus
Opening of the Academic Year 2012/2013

On 17 September 2012, the students and staff of Studium Theologicum Salesianum gathered for the inauguration of the academic year 2012-2013. The function began with a celebration of the Word of God in the Church. Fr. PierGiorgio Gianazza, the Vice-Provincial of the Middle East Province (MOR) of the Salesians preached on the theme of Faith. The teaching staff renewed their commitment to their teaching ministry, with a public recitation of the creed in the presence of Rev. Fr. Munir El Rai, Provincial of MOR. After refreshments, the second part of the programme was held in Don Bosco Hall.

Fr Munir gave a short message. The new students and the teaching staff were introduced to the academic community. The highlight of the programme was the conferring of the medal of the Salesian Pontifical University to Fr Joan Vernet. Fr Paolo Carlotti, the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Theology thanked Fr Vernet for his services and read the letter of the Chancellor of the University conferring the medal of appreciation on Fr Vernet. Fr Carlotti in his speech highlighted the very positive relationship that exists between the campus in Jerusalem and the University in Rome.

The Principal, Fr. Biju Michael presented a summary report of the previous academic year and highlighted the initiatives planned for the new academic year. In his message for the new year, he stressed the need to deeply desire the Word of God. Using the example of a small group of three unarmed men who manage to steal meat from the mouth of fifteen lions, he showed how a deep hunger for the Word of God can motivate the study of theology. Eating the scroll is an image in the Bible which symbolizes the study of the Scripture and Theology in order to then [to] speak in the name of God. The inaugural programme was followed by the first student assembly.
