Topographical visit to the Holy Sepulcher

Jerusalem, 13 September 2013
Report by: Samynathan James Raja, SDB

On 13th September, 2013, the first year students were given the opportunity to visit the Basilica of Calvary and the Holy Sepulcher; this was our first topographical visit to the Old City of Jerusalem. We had Holy mass in the tomb of Lord Jesus Christ at 7.00am; it was presided over by Rev. Fr. Biju, the Principal of our institution.  After the mass we walked towards the Basilica of St.Anne,  which is the property of the Missionaries of Africa, known also as the White Fathers, where we had breakfast. This is the formation community of the Missionaries of Africa. Their students study theology at the Studium Theologicum Salesianum.  Rev.Fr. Dominic Arnauld M.Afr welcomed us and explained to us the history of St. Anne's basilica, the birth place of our Blessed mother Mary. Then, Rev. Fr. Paul M.Afr., who is an expert in the knowledge of the topography of the Old City gave a one hour lecture on the history of the Holy Sepulcher and accompanied us back to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. There he explained to us in detail the very interesting history about the Holy Sepulcher and the many chapels within the Basilica, which belong to different Christian denominations. After this memorable experience each one returned to his respective community.
